One of my favorite programs, MilkDrop, has always been a pain to install for whatever reason. I had never actually setup MilkDrop from the source code before and decided to do it. As normal I'll walk you through the process step by step and it should be relatively simple.
SourceForge is an open-sourced cloud-based platform where developers share their apps for reviews, ratings and according to it, constantly making changes for an updated and better version than the previous one for all people to use.
Many developers made their name by posting their apps on SourceForge and gaining popularity for their works. SourceForge is the arena where a beginner can also evolve into a professional by constantly learning from the reviews he received.
MilkDrop is a music visualizer app in SourceForge which is also an extension to the Winamp music player. MilkDrop software renders the soundwaves of the music in a visual feedback loop, driven by 3D graphics hardware, which helps the software to create a visual journey through sound.
MilkDrop can also be driven by a live audio feed. You can use MilkDrop as your visualizer because it’s user-friendly functions and visualization features are top-notch.

Selecting the visualizer from Winamp
MilkDrop also comes with Winamp application built-in features. You can also download it by downloading Winamp. To install it:
- Download and install the latest version of Winamp from the web.
- During the installation, you must make sure the "MilkDrop" visualizer option is checked so that it gets installed too.
- If Winamp is successfully installed, launch the app. You can check the application by loading some of your music files into your playlist and start playing some music. If you play music before attempting to launch the visualizer, you'll just see a black screen. The visualizer doesn’t work if you play the music first. So, launch the visualizer first and then play music.
- After playing the music, press CTRL+K to view a list of visualization plug-ins options.
- Look for "MilkDrop 2" from the list and select it.
- Click the "Start" button, and it will launch the selected visualizer.
- As you listen to the music MilkDrop will show you the visualization of the soundwaves you are hearing.
You have now successfully installed MilkDrop for your system interface.
Pros and Cons of MilkDrop
- MilkDrop comes along with the Winamp installation.
- A preset pack made by Tryptonaut is available with 760 visuals.
