How to make Cortana to respond to only one voice? With the popularity of Microsoft's new assistant Cortana increasing day by day and the increased privacy concerns, I have been receiving a lot of requests asking me this question. This article will help you solve this issue.

 Make Cortana To Respond

Disclaimer: Please note, the process given below may not work for the more recent versions of Windows 10.

Cortana works with any voice giving commands. However, you can train Cortana to respond to only your voice. But to do that, you would need to train Cortana to recognize your voice.

First, you need to start Cortana. You can do that by clicking on the Cortana icon in the taskbar. You should see the following.

Then select the Notebook option. It is the third option after the hamburger menu and the Home option in the Cortana window. You should see the following:

Click on Settings to see the following:

Settings to see the following

Make sure the Hey Cortana is set to On (shown as Arrow 2). Also, select Respond best to To me (Arrow 3). Then select the option Learn my voice (Arrow 4). This brings up the following window, where Cortana will ask you to repeat six sentences to learn your voice:

Hey Cortana is set to On

Just ensure that you are in a quiet place where there is no disturbance from external sounds. If you are in a noisy place Cortana will find it difficult to recognize your voice properly. When you are ready to start training Cortana, press Start.

When you are ready to start

You will now have to read out the six teaching sentences, which are actual voice commands that you can give Cortana. Read out the sentences in your normal voice, slowly and clearly. Once you have read out the sentences, you should see.

Now Cortana should have learned your voice and will respond only to you.

Please note that in newer versions of Windows 10, Cortana may look different from the screenshots shown above. Please also note, the more recent versions of Windows treat Cortana as an app that can be installed from the Microsoft Store.

What if Cortana cannot hear you?

Ensure that your microphone is on and in working order

Here is how you can check your microphone:

  1. First, ensure that you have enabled the microphone and that you have made it the default input device. On the Speakers icon on the taskbar, do a right-click, and select Sounds. Ensure that you set the microphone as the default device in the Recording section, by selecting the check box.
  2. Try recording something by right-clicking the Speakers icon on the taskbar and selecting Sounds. Then, in the Recording section, see if there is movement as you speak. If you can see movement, it means your device is working just fine.
  3. You could use the Windows 10 Voice Recorder to test if your microphone is faulty. When you playback what you recorded, if the output is not clear, or is too noisy, or comes out distorted, your microphone may be at fault or you may need to update your audio device drivers.

Check that you have the appropriate speech-language installed

Cortana work in many languages. Ensure that that you download and install the required speech-language if you want Cortana to understand what you say.

To check the speech-language that is in use at the moment:

  1. Select Start and click Settings. Then select Time & Language followed by Speech. Then, in Choose the language you speak with your device, select your appropriate language.
  2. If a new speech-language needs to be installed, select Start, Settings, Time & Language, Language. Choose the option Add a language. Select and install the appropriate language from the list. Just ensure that the language you choose is supported for speech recognition (if yes, it has a small microphone next to it). Click on Next. Select the Speech recognition checkbox. After this, select Install. For the changes to take effect, you may need to restart your computer.
