Microsoft decided to annoy its users with lock screen ads in Windows 8.1 and later. Usually, such advertisement is shown on the bottom-left corner of the screen. If you are a Windows 10 user, you might know that these ads are not shown on login screen (where you first see an image after Windows logo animation), but they're still there on quick start menu and lock screen. Not only these ads are annoying, but also they waste a lot of system resources and make your laptop or desktop more laggy than usual.
If your computer has been showing advertisements on the lock screen, then they must've been distracting you from signing in. Here are tools you can use to finally get rid of those ads:
Winaero Tweaker
- On the left sidebar, go to Behavior and select "Ads and Unwanted Apps". Alternatively, you can type "ads" in the search bar and look for "Ads and Unwanted Apps".
- Tick "Disable ads in Windows 10". This should automatically tick everything that's under "Disable ads in Windows 10".
- In the warning message, you can select "Reboot now" or "I'll do it myself later".
O&O ShutUp10
- Scroll down until you see the Lock Screen.
- Under Lock Screen, switch on "Disable Windows Spotlight" and "Disable fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen".
- Close O&O ShutUp10 to save the changes you've made.
Ultimate Windows Tweaker
- Click Security & Piracy on the left sidebar.
- Go to the Privacy tab, then tick "Disable Telemetry" and "Disable and Reset Advertising ID".
- Click Apply Tweaks to save your changes.
Alternatively, you can disable Cortana to disable annoying lock screen adverts. Just go to Security & Privacy and go to the Privacy tab. Under the Privacy tab, untick "Disable Cortana" and click Apply Tweaks.
DoNotSpy10
- On the left sidebar, tick "Disable and Reset Advertising ID" and "Disable Application Telemetry".
- On the warning window, click No.
- Click OK when changes have been applied, then reboot your computer.
Private WinTen
- Click on the shield icon on the left sidebar and go to Privacy & Advertisement.
- Switch off "Disable Advertisement".
- On the right sidebar, switch off "Turn Off Advertising ID".
- Close the interface to execute your changes.
WinPurify
- Go to the Privacy and Security tab.
- Then switch off "Disable Advertising ID".
- Alternately, you can go to the "Apps and Applications" tab and switch off "Disable Cortana".
Ashampoo AntiSpy
- Select Action on the upper-right corner. Under General, turn off "Let apps use my advertising ID for experiences across apps." Close the interface afterward.
Windows 10 Login Background Changer
- Under Edit Background on the right sidebar, click on the image icon
- Select the picture you want to set as your lock screen background and click Open.
- The filename of your chosen background picture should appear next to the image icon.
Click Apply Changes
- Then click OK on the success window.
- Close the program afterwards. Log out and log in to see your chosen lock screen background picture.
Lock Screen Customizer
- Under Background and Colors, click Change Image.
- Browse and select your lock screen background, then click Open.
Under Language and Time Format, select 24 Hours
Close the program, then log out of your computer. Log in and click Lock. You should see your new lock screen background afterward.
If you want to select a slideshow instead of an image for your lock screen, click Lock Screen Slideshow at the bottom of the interface.
In the Lock Screen Slideshow window, tick "Enable this feature" and "Enable this feature for the default Lock Screen". Click Add Folder.
Select a folder containing images that you want to put in a slideshow, then click Select Folder.
The filename of your folder should appear in the list. Select that folder and click Close.
Close the program and sign out of your computer. Log in and select Lock. If your lock screen displays an image from your chosen folder, log out. Log in again, then select lock to see if your lock on screen displays another image from your chosen folder.
Once you're done using any of these tools to get rid of those ads, log out of your computer. Your lock screen shouldn't display adverts after you turn on your computer.
