Have you ever received photos on your Android device from another Android user who has attached them to an email? You probably have, but when you tried to open the pictures, all you saw was a link that takes you back to the "Gallery". Why do you get this and what are the steps to follow in order to get your photos?
Email remains a reliable way of transferring photos without the loss of quality. While usually reserved for formal matters, sending pictures via email is more secure and private compared to using the services of some social media apps.
Sometimes, we receive an email containing important image files. Whether it’s a family photo or a high-resolution infographic, we want to save it to our Android phone. Doing so gives us easy access to the image even if the phone is offline, but how do we do it?
For an Android-savvy user, doing so is quite simple. Continue reading to learn more.
Check Your Email App
Android phones usually contain a generic email app and a Gmail (Google Mail) app. The process of transferring photos from email to your phone’s local storage (Gallery) depends on which email app you are using.
This article will show you how to transfer photos from your email to your gallery using two major email providers: Google’s Gmail and Microsoft Outlook.
Gmail App
Globally, Google’s Gmail is the largest email provider with around 1 billion active users. The Gmail app is pre-installed on every Android smartphone (except Android-derived modified operating systems).
The following are the steps in transferring photos (inserted as an attachment) from an email to your phone’s gallery:
- Open the Gmail app on your smartphone.
- Select the email message you wish to open. Typically, if an email has an attachment (whether it’s a photo or a different file), a paper clip icon will appear on the right side of the email entry (refer to the screenshot below).
- Once the email has been opened, scroll down to view the attachments.
- The attachments may be downloaded to your phone or saved to Google Drive. If you want to save it to your phone’s local storage (phone/internal) and make it available in the gallery, press the download button as shown in the screenshot below.
On some occasions, a pop-out prompt will appear with the question “Allow Gmail to access your files and storage on this device?” (question may vary depending on your Android version). When this pops up, choose “Allow.”
- Your photo is now part of your local phone’s storage and can be seen using the Gallery app. Usually, it is stored under “downloads.”
If the photo is embedded or part of the email body (instead of being a separate attachment), here are the steps to transfer the image from email to gallery:
- Open the email containing the photo.
- Select the photo by holding it.
- Choose “View Image.”
- Look for the additional options on the upper right’s vertical ellipsis (the “three dots”).
- Choose “Save.” The photo will now be saved on your device and will show up in the gallery.
Outlook
Outlook is an email service that is part of Microsoft Office. Due to the rise of smartphones, Outlook is also available as an Android app.
Here are the methods to save an embedded image to the gallery.
- Open the Outlook app. Go to the email having the image you want to download and open it by double-tapping.
- Swipe right to show the embedded attachments.
- A “Files” section will appear, showing the various attachments (images or not) .
- Look for the image you wish to save to the gallery. Click the drop-down button on its right.
- On the menu shown below, tap “Device” on the “Save to” options. On some occasions, a pop-out prompt will appear with the question “Allow Outlook to access your files and storage on this device?” (question may vary depending on your Android version). Choose “Allow.”
- The file will then be saved on your device.
Summary: How to transfer photos from email to gallery on Android?
- To transfer a photo from an email to the Android gallery, you need to download the image and save it to the gallery. You can do this by directly tapping on the attached image or by opening an attachment from your Gmail app or email client. After you have downloaded an image, you can find it in your Downloads folder and move it to your gallery from there.
- If an attached image is already embedded into the body of an email, you can download it by tapping and holding on the image for a few seconds. This will open a menu that will allow you to save the image.
- If your photo is saved as an attachment in gmail, you can view it by opening the email and tapping on the “download” icon that is located beside the image. The image is now downloaded and waiting for you in your gallery.
- Attached images can be saved to your Android gallery in a few easy steps.
