Lucid chart is an online tool that lets you create, revise, design, and share diagrams and chart boxes. It’s a smart platform that can help you in the visualization and automation of diagrams and boxes.

Lucid chart is mostly used for designing team hierarchy, workflow, project approach, flowchart, etc via templates or manually.  While creating a flowchart, you can introduce different box designs, illustrations, line types, text formattings, etc as well.

Now in this tutorial, we’re going to learn how to upload/add an image to a Lucid chart document.

Before you begin

You need a Lucid chart account. It’s not software and its operations are fully online based. So simply go to the Lucid chart website from your browser to create a free account. Some premium account options offer additional accommodations. You can check them out as well.

Search for images or import

With the search and import tool, you can easily find and locate the shape or image you need.

Here’s how to perform a keyword search in Lucid chart.

  1. At the top right of the toolbox, click the magnifying glass icon.
    Using the search tool
  2. Select Shapes, Images, or Icons. Type in a keyword into the search bar and click “Go” to browse the search results.

From the results, you can directly drag and drop an icon, shape, or image to add to your design.

Manually add an image

With Lucid chart, you can add both regular formats such as a PNG or a JPG, or a vector format such as an SVG (scalable vector graphics). Let’s learn how to add them one by one.

Importing an image

  1. Open your design/document.
  2. At the left-hand toolbox, you’ll see an image icon near the top right. Hit it.

  5. And done! You now have an image file added to your design.

  2. From the menu, select “SVG”.
  3. Locate the SVG file on your library.
  4. Click “Open” to import the file into your design.

Adding a custom shape

If you cannot find your preferred image or shape, you can import SVGs and Visio stencil files such as a .vss, .vsx, and .vssx to the custom shape libraries to bring your shapes into Lucid chart.

  1. Open your Workspace Manager via the "Shapes" button. It’s in the top left corner of the shapes panel. You can simply press "M" on your keyboard to open it.
    the Shapes button
  2. Click on "Import Shapes". Then select "Add to Existing Library" to determine where you want to keep your imported file.
  3. Be sure to specify a name for the library on the import page.
  4. Click “Choose File” and locate the SVG or Visio stencil file you want to upload.
  5. Your new shape should be available in the shapes panel.

Things to remember

Although you can add most image formats, Lucid charts does not support gif image extensions. So no animations for now.

You can directly add images from cloud storage facilities. But to integrate, you’ll need to adopt a premium plan from Lucid chart.
