So you’ve just started playing Minecraft, and it’s great. You’ve built yourself a shelter to stay in the first night (which lasted over 20 minutes!) and collected some wood and stone. But now, someone from your clan tells you that you need to go mining for diamonds. So you dig for a few minutes and then go back inside for the night…but how long does the night last? Will you have enough time to get diamonds before the sun rises?

Long does a night last in Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios. It was officially released in November 2011. Minecraft has a day-night cycle that is 20 minutes long in real-time. It alternates between two main light settings. One hour of playing Minecraft in real-time is equal to 3 Minecraft days.

One Minecraft day is the longest in the cycle at 10 minutes in real-time. It is followed by sunset/dusk, which lasts for about 90 seconds in real-time. Night then comes at around 7 minutes in real-time. To end the cycle, sunrise/dawn arrives, which is also about 90 seconds in real-time.

Which is also about 90 seconds

In Minecraft night, the moon and some white specks as stars are seen in a black background in the sky. Eight different moon phases change each night.

A Minecraft night is the most dangerous time of the cycle. When playing Minecraft for the first time, it should be a top priority to survive the first Minecraft night. This is when “mobs” or monsters such as skeletons, zombies, creepers, and others will spawn. Spiders generally neutral in the daytime, unless actively chasing a player, become hostile in the night. Hostile mobs caught in daylight will burn.

The light level during nighttime is at 4, which makes it challenging to see in the game. It is possible to see better if there is a light source apart from the moon or if the character had a night vision potion. Unlike in the daytime, crops do not grow unless there is a nearby light source.

At night, villagers (humanoid, non-player characters in the game) will go inside their homes. If some villagers are still outside at nighttime, they will attempt to be indoors. A group of zombies may do sieges in villages. They would break down the houses to kill the villagers inside.

Surviving Minecraft at Night

Here are some tips on how to survive Minecraft at night:

  1. In a single-player game, a player can sleep in a bed to skip the night if there are no hostile mobs nearby. This works in a multiplayer game if all players sleep in a bed.
  2. When selecting an area for the first base, have it nearby the “spawn” point. This is the point where a player first appeared in the game. When the character dies, it appears on this point without any equipment. This works well when a player is still new in the game. As familiarization of the terrain grows, it is up to the player to move the base or not.
  3. On the first night and the player is unarmed, create a quick shelter by digging a 1x3 hole in the ground and cover or “cap” it with a dirt block. A dirt block can be mined without tools. This temporary shelter will keep the player safely hidden from mobs until dawn.
  4. A player can also build a makeshift shack or a house made of dirt. The dirt walls should be at least two blocks high with no gaps so that skeletons, zombies, and other mobs cannot go in or jump over.

Summary: Long last night in Minecraft

  • For a few more days now
  • But one day in Minecraft is equal to 10 seconds of real time
  • So if you ignored the clock and played on for a year, that would be 8 years in Minecraft time
  • As your villagers age and die, and generate offspring to replace them
  • So their daily routine consists of eating, sleeping and getting on with the business of living
  • Moving around and creating is what real players do all the time
  • Obviously, towards the end of the day you will want to get home and hide from the monsters!
  • There are quite a few things that are only available at night.  You can fish to get food,  you can use a sword to kill creepers or skeletons.  Both fish and meat can be cooked over a fire.  In addition, there is an animal called a bat that also comes out at night.  If you hit it with your sword it will die, but it won't give you anything.   These bats cannot hurt you by themselves but they can spread disease.  Wolves also come out at night.  They have red eyes so they are easy to spot in the dark.  They too
