A large number of server owners aren't aware that it is possible to permanently ban an IP address on Discord. This article will focus on providing you with the tools and knowledge needed to do so. A ban on a server is often temporary, though there are times when you may want to make the ban on an IP permanent. Let's go over the reasons why we might want to ban an IP permanently and exactly how we can achieve this.
One of the best ways to communicate is via Discord. They provide text, voice, and video chats for communicating with people. You also have the upper hand on your account. This means that everything that happens in your account depends on you such as creating servers with close peers or a community sharing the same interest as yours.
However, there is a take especially when you choose to do the latter. There may be some people coming into your server just to mess things up, ruining the original purpose of the server. This can cause all sorts of problems. That’s why we are providing you a full guide on how you could intervene before the problem gets bigger.
Discord automatically bans a user’s IP address -- it is not just the problematic user you are banning on your server but everyone sharing the same IP address. No one from that IP address would be able to enter your server even if they have the purest intention of joining. However, there is still a breach in this security by implementing VPN. As long as the user does not know how to incorporate VPN on their computers, then your server would be safe from them.
Banning a user in Discord is more permanent than kicking them from your server. A kicked member can still freely join your server as long as they receive an invitation from someone. On the other hand, banning a user permanently removes them on your server. Their IP address is recorded so that they won’t be able to join again. However, any other user sharing the same IP address won’t be able to join your server anymore.
Here are the steps on how you can ban someone on your Discord channel or server:
- Open your Discord app on your computer or mobile. You can also open it on your browser. All browsers can be used to access the Discord website.
- Sign in so that you can access your account and server. When using the website, you can find the log-in button at the top right corner of the screen.
- After logging in, choose the server where the user you want to ban is.
- Find the user that you want to remove on the server by choosing the channel where they can be found. You’ll find it from the main panel of your server and can be either a text channel or voice channel. Text channel has a prefix of “#” while voice channel has a sound icon.
- The people on the voice channel can be seen without accessing the channel itself. However, for the text channel, you have to select the channel so that all the members both online and offline would appear at the rightmost of your screen.
- Find the account you want to permanently ban from your server.
- Right-click the name of the user so that the menu will show.
- At the lower end of this menu, a “Ban (username)” will show. Click it then you will prompt into a new dialog box asking if the decision is final and confirmed.
- Click the word “Ban” to permanently delete and remove the user and their IP address from your server.
That’s just how easy it is to ban a user on Discord. If there are problematic people still coming into your server after following this guide, directly contact Discord’s support team. They should be able to help you with your concerns. You can also add verification levels in allowing a user to your server.
Summary: Permanently Banning an IP Address on Discord
- Step: Close the Discord app, go to its installation folder on your Windows system. The default location is C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Discord
- Step: Delete the %appdata%/discord/Cache folder and restart Discord.
- Step: Open your local firewall and see if you can see any blocked connection.
- Step: If you cannot see any blocked connection, then open Discord web version and try to reproduce the issue again.
- Check your firewall logs to see if Discord has been blocked now or not.
- If you can see Discord listed in this log, then right-click on it and select delete option to remove Discord address from the blacklist list of your firewall.
- Step: If you still cannot reproduce this issue now, then it means there was some glitch in the application which was causing this problem but it has been fixed now (hopefully).
- However, if you still face this problem after trying above steps, then it is possible that someone else has blocked access for Discord application on your network. This may be happening because someone might have a malicious plan for you or because of some misconfiguration done by your administrator or some other person who have access to network settings on your network/PC.
